What are prostaglandins?
Prostaglandins are naturally occurring compounds, derived from essential fatty acids you’ll find in food such as seeds, nuts and fish. Certain physiological processes need prostaglandins to function, plus it’s also helpful in the treatment of glaucoma... with surprising spin-off results:Prostaglandins lengthened, darkened and thickened lashes in glaucoma patients. How? They induce and prolong the active lash growth phase, stimulate melanin production and increase hair bulb size. Naturally, this led to prostaglandins being added to a lot of lash serum formulas.
With this, however, came the discovery of far less welcome side effects: Dryness, redness, itching, sensitivity, iris darkening, increased pigmented patches on eyelids and periorbital volume loss (sunken, hollow eyes) . Thicker, longer lashes suddenly didn’t sound so appealing.
A safer way to grow longer, thicker lashes
Using prostaglandins wasn’t an option for us. The challenge was that ‘free-from’ serums are seen as far less effective. We made it our mission to catalyse change.It took a while… three years and 24 formulations, to be precise.
